Indiscretion in the Heat

June 30, 2008 08:37 by Big Momma

It was really hot in the Pacific Northwest (aka the PNW or PNDub) this weekend, up to 90 degrees, which for us fair weather folks is blistering. The heat brought out the trailer trash in me. I found myself in the back yard soaking my swollen feet in the bright blue plastic kiddie pool we bought for Murphy the Wonder Dog last summer. Making the scene worse was the dog turd right next to the pool, that I didn't bother to pick up, I was too hot, I just looked at it and decided it was too much effort to expend the energy to pick it up.

My regression to trailer trash status didn't stop there. I took Murphy the Wonder Dog to a lake front dog park near our house on Saturday morning...and decided it was a good idea to swim with him. I grew up swimming in the lake, but swimming along the shore of a dog park is really gross. But that didn't stop me. I wore my shorts and a tank (wife beater of course), and was too hot and lazy to take off my sneakers. I was the only person in the water, there were 10 or so other dog owners there, but they all had the good sense to stay on the beach. In hindsight, they probably thought I was a crazy homeless lady who got pregnant making it with a transient dude on the stoop of city hall. Thinking back, as I was swimming with nearly a dozen dogs, I should have started barking and caught a tennis ball in my mouth just to see what it takes to get arrested in our small community.

Today I am making an effort to stay clear of city buildings, for fear of finding myself beached in the refreshment of the cold water in a public fountain. I've been told that pregnancy will steal your humility, as it knows no indiscretion. This is the first heat wave of my pregnancy, if I survive the summer without being ticketed for a public display of insanity I will be surprised.
